Before any major construction can take place that will affect the use, egress or occupancy of a space, an Alteration Type 1 (Alt1) permit must be obtained.
This permit is necessary in order to obtain a new or amended Certificate of Occupancy (CO) from the local building department. The Alt1 permit process is designed to ensure that all construction meets the required Building Code standards for safety and habitability.
To obtain an Alt1 permit, applicants must submit detailed plans and specifications for the proposed construction. Once the plans have been reviewed and approved, the applicant will be issued a permit that must be prominently displayed at the job site. Alt1 permits are valid for a specific period, after which they must be renewed.
Failure to obtain the proper permits can result in significant fines and delays in construction.
