Building permit applications can be confusing and time-consuming, but there are ways to streamline the process and make it more efficient. One way is to file for an Alteration Type 2 (Alt2) application.
This application is typically used for standard interior demolition and/or renovation work that doesn’t affect the use, egress, or occupancy of the space. As a result, an Alt2 doesn’t require a new or amended CO, which can save time and hassle in the long run.
Additionally, an Alt2 can be filed as a Directive 2 (D2) or Directive 14 (D14) application. Both directives were implemented in 1975 and are designed to make the filing process more efficient.
Understanding which type of Alt2 application is right for your project can save time and money in the long run.
Alternate 2 Examples
- Renovations to an Interior Apartment
- Combining Apartments (depending on the circumstances)
- Keeping the usage as a store while renovating a retail establishment
- Remodeling a restaurant as long as it is still a restaurant.
- Removing a wall or constructing a new one
- Alterations where you get a “letter of no objection”
